Disruptive Innovation in Healthcare Delivery

Chief Operating Officer for Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital  Newport, Oregon

Moderator Jane Russell serves as the chief operating officer for Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport, Oregon.

Dr. Russell holds a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Creighton University and a Master of Business Administration in management and strategy from Western Governors University.  She is Board Certified in Oncology Pharmacy and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.  She is a healthcare executive with extensive experience in complex health system settings. She has leadership experience in hospitals, primary and specialty care, ancillary services, environmental health, dental services, nursing homes, and primary behavioral health and residential facilities.  

Before taking this position, Jane served 20 years in the United States Public Health Service detailed to the Indian Health Service and has worked as a clinical pharmacist and progressed in her career to her final position as Vice President of Medical and Multi-Specialty Operations for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.  She retired as a Captain (0-6) in 2018. She was also a USPHS Rapid Deployment Force Team 3 member during her service. She participated in multiple deployments, including Hurricanes Gustave and Ike and the Unaccompanied Children mission in Texas and Arizona.

Jane has been in her role since August 2018.  During her tenure, she has led the Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital’s 57-million-dollar remodel and oversaw operations for the hospital.  In addition to her role as COO, she leads the laboratory service line for the Samaritan system. She also serves on the Newport Vision 2040 Advisory Committee, where she currently serves as chair.

Interim Chief Medical Officer Samaritan Health Services

Panelist Dr. Brent Godek has dedicated over a decade to Samaritan Health Services in Albany, OR, occupying several leadership roles that highlight his commitment to advancing healthcare delivery. From October 2022, Dr. Godek embraced the position of Interim Chief Medical Officer at Samaritan Health Plans, spearheading collaborations to enhance population health strategies. His oversight spans utilization management, pharmacy, care coordination, and quality improvement. Previously, as Senior Medical Director for the Medical Specialties Division at Samaritan Medical Group since April 2020, he managed areas including Cardiothoracic Surgery, Hospice, and Behavioral Health.

Throughout his tenure, Dr. Godek has championed various health initiatives, including leading the

Annual Well Visit Initiative and Pain Solutions – First Steps. His involvement extends across numerous councils and committees, emphasizing his holistic approach to healthcare. Notably, he served as the Primary Care Medical Director from 2012 to 2020 and was a pivotal Interim Director of Integrated Behavioral Health. Additionally, Dr. Godek boasts a certification in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and remains an active staff member at Albany General Hospital.

Medical Director Health Hospital@Home, OHSU

As of September 25, 2023, panelist Dr. S. Ayako Mayo holds the esteemed position of Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, OR. After attaining her Bachelor of Arts in Japanese from Washington University in Saint Louis in 2007, she advanced her academic career, earning her Doctor of Medicine from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Medical School in 2015. Subsequent pivotal milestones in her medical journey included an internship at the University of Utah, followed by a residency at OHSU in Internal Medicine.

Apart from her academic roles at OHSU, Dr. Mayo has been influential in clinical and hospital management, notably serving as the Medical Director of OHSU Health Hospital@Home since 2021. Her scholarly contributions encompass an array of peer-reviewed publications and presentations, particularly emphasizing “Hospital at Home” and internal medicine’s intricate facets. Furthermore, Dr. Mayo’s commitment to education shines through her curriculum development endeavors, mentoring programs, and direct clinical teaching roles. With active memberships in the Oregon Medical Association and the American College of Physicians, she continues to make an indelible mark in the realm of hospital medicine and patient care.

Chief Executive Officer for Southern Oregon Cardiology, LLC (SOC)

Moderator Michael Crandell is the Chief Executive Officer for Southern Oregon Cardiology, LLC (SOC), a 20-physician, 4 NPs, and 110 FTE cardiology group serving Southern Oregon and Northern California. Providing multi-specialty invasive, interventional electrophysiology procedures. The practice owns an outpatient diagnostic and imaging management company and a joint venture cath lab. SOC has a co-management arrangement for the cardiovascular service line (CVSL) with Asante Health System. Asante/SOC has been recognized as a top 50 cardiology hospital practice annually by Watson/Truven.

Dr. Crandell directs and coordinates all operations and financial management aspects for the practice and its four subsidiaries: human resource management, contract negotiation, strategic planning and policy development, and administration.

Director in Workforce Strategy, Guidehouse Healthcare Operational Excellence

Panelist Martha Davis is a Director in Workforce Strategy within Guidehouse’s Healthcare Operational Excellence practice. She works with clients nationwide to improve workforce retention, engagement, and experience. Her expertise spans talent acquisition and strategic workforce planning, employee and provider onboarding and orientation, career development, performance feedback, appreciation, inclusion, and well-being.  

Martha has more than thirty years’ of experience working within healthcare systems and in consultative roles. She brings deep expertise in the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria, human-centered design, and high reliability.  She offers significant experience leveraging (re)Vision change management—the Guidehouse human-centered framework certified by the American Society of Change Management Professionals.

Martha co-developed and taught a performance excellence course in the Healthcare Executive MBA program at Colorado University.  She is certified in several leadership behavioral assessment methods and holds undergraduate degrees in business administration and a graduate degree in management science.

Vice President of Human Resources, Samaritan Health Services

Panelist Scott Russell serves as the vice president of Human Resources for Samaritan Health Services. In this position, he oversees the human resources functions serving 6,000 employees. The Human Resources function comprises the following: Compensation Benefits & Technical HR, Employee Health & Safety, Employee & Labor Relations, HR Operations, Learning & Development and Talent Acquisition.

He spends his time helping Samaritan recruit, train, and retain employees, working to improve the employment experience so Samaritan employees may best serve patients and the community.  

Russell received an associate degree in general studies-communications from Ricks College, now known as Brigham Young University – Idaho, and a bachelor’s degree in marriage, family, and human development from Brigham Young University in Utah. Russell is a member of and active in local and state chapters of the Society for Human Resources Management. 

Russell joined Samaritan in June 2006 as a staff recruiter, leading to various other HR-related roles, including assistant department manager, Labor Relations director and Employee Relations director. He transitioned to the vice president role in April 2023. Russell’s professional journey illustrates Samaritan’s commitment to career development opportunities.
